The same, in a sense,
We stayed at South Cerny and we did some
30 hours of Chipmunk flying.
To me, I was sort of
Not casual in the sense, but
It's quite a small aeroplane.
fairly simple equipment
So I enjoyed flying it,
how to drive a car, a new car,
And almost the same when I went up
pilot training on a Jet Provost,
I enjoyed the flying, I enjoyed
But to me, it was still
You know, I was just doing a job,
and I really enjoyed doing these things.
So that was what flying was all about.
Once again, as we— when at the ceremony
So I guess I did quite well.
And then I went to fast jet
And here,
I was sent off one day
level, 30,000 feet.
I can't remember what it was,
was a beautiful sunny day.
I could see Ireland over on one side,
on the other side,
and the sun was shining,
And I sat there thinking,
I was a mechanic a very short while ago.
Here I am now in this
millions of pounds, this jet,
Nobody can see me.
Well, the radar could see me,
And this jet is the same
And if you're just move the stick like,
oof, from up to up very, very quickly.
I thought, wow, that's fantastic.
Do it again.
Do it the other way.
And then I thought,
this thing will go supersonic.
Push the stick forward now,
It was magic for me, mesmerising.
And it was— that was the point at which I
Just, just unbelievably good.
And I've never lost that.
You know, many— 50, 60 years later,
Even my last jobs, you know,
of Heathrow, the moment
as the wheels left the ground, I had this
I never lost it.
