Play / pause Officer Training

Officer Training

Transcript

So going forward to officer training

the really odd thing

figuratively I sort of went from being

the lowest person on the base on one day,

to being an officer cadet at South Cerny.

So I completely left all my airman things

to do officer things.

I started to have

I'd had to dress like an officer,

Because I didn't actually know how to do

So tailors from London would come up

and try and sell us suits and different

types of clothes, officer-type

Shoemakers would come up and

London banks would come and ask

We would have practise meals

No food, but the staff would be there,

and the plates and all the different

For me, that was life-saving.

Life-saving.

You know, I had to buy a trilby hat,

I had to doff my hat to ladies.

I mean, it taught me everything I needed

Once again, I had

Whereas everyone else was, again,

they'd just joined the Air Force,

18 to 22, I'm now 25.

So when the other guys are struggling

or clean the floor or whatever,

When they struggled,

I could do them in my sleep.

And therefore, I quickly became

all the other cadets were concerned.

But I also became the course leader

And at the end of the course,

I was one of the 2

a sword that saluted the dignitary

You know, I'd gone from zero to hero in

and was quite enjoying it.
