Planning a career

Transcript

Life became good for me.

Come back from the Middle East,

I had enough money to

I bought a little minivan,

I was driving to London

This is the swinging '60s.

Beatles every month,

And I would take 3 fair-paying

to London on a Friday night,

on a Sunday night and

So life was absolutely fantastic.

I was really enjoying life.

But career-wise,

I was still an airman,

I wasn't a junior technician,

And I'd already been in 5

So I realised this is -

I've either got to work out

to do in 4 years' time,

or I need to work out

to improve my present situation.

Going back to my first

when I was a jack of all trades but

I was a dead ringer

So people knew that if

the best guy to get is Harry

because he never goes

And a sergeant navigator

regularly got hold of me early,

He'd go to his

he'd come back in the

he'd pour me a Scotch

and we'd have a few Scotches.

And he'd say to me,

I said, "Well, that's what I am." I said,

He said, "But if you had two O-levels,

All you need is two O-levels

Then I completely forgot about it

when I'm thinking to myself,

"What am I doing? Where am I going?"

So I take another O-level.

One - because I took one

I'll take another O-level.

And I applied to be a navigator.

I know nothing about navigators

except that I've seen them

and I know they're aircrew,

and I know they probably

And I applied to become a navigator.

I send the - there's an application form

and the reply when it comes

all navigators from now on

and you don't have the qualifications

and the minimum qualification

But if you want to become aircrew,

You could apply for air loadmaster.

So I didn't have to fill

I just wrote back saying,

Because it would take me -

I would instantly become a sergeant,

which would have taken me

at the rate of progress

and the salary would be 3 times

so it was quite an easy decision.
