The third thing was sport.
I had played a bit of soccer,
but I started to play basketball.
The basketball court,
was like 50 yards from my bed.
So it was easy to go and
in the evenings when it was
Much to my disgust,
I gradually got better at basketball
because I really wanted to be
And eventually I represented the
and eventually I became the best,
I eventually became the best
Not only did I play basketball
our Argosies used to fly down
We had an RAF base there
and regularly they would
And sometimes, once again,
So I started to join those
you know, just go down to Nairobi,
there and come back again.
It transpired while I was there
the Rift Valley Academy,
was trying to start a basketball team.
Okay, they had other sports,
Would I come up and help them,
So I went to play for them, yeah.
And after a while I realised I could
on a regular basis when
you know, every now and again.
If they let me know early enough,
ground crew person that
So I did start playing for,
the Rift Valley Academy
as well as for Khormaksar.
And believe it or not, the
and it still has a basketball team.
At the end of my tour
I was sent back to UK,
in South Wales called St Athan.
There I was joining a
and my job in the
within the maintenance unit,
there was a workshop area,
and the other people
was to service electrical
There would be
all from V-Force, V-Bombers,
So you go to a shelf,
whatever it was, and you
You strip it down, repair it,
put it back together again,
But the other thing about St Athan,
on the other side, the
was the
My expertise at basketball,
quickly got better and better
So very quickly I was representing
which we were part of.
There were 8 commands
and once a year there would
And that would include
the Middle East,
Fighter Command,
and they would all get together
and have this big
So I played for the Command,
to the inter-command competition,
I got selected to play for the
Royal Air Force, when they next met.
And the first time I played
against the Army and the Navy,
I got selected to play for
The ultimate that happened at that,
as far as basketball was concerned,
and they were playing an
against Hungary, Romania,
I played for Wales as
So sport did me a lot of good
and it also helped to
It raised my profile a little bit
because I became the best
and it raised my profile a bit at
St. Athan where I was.
