Why Engineering?

When I was a young girl,

girls in those days didn't get to play with cool stuff

like Meccano or what have you,

but I had a brother, seven years older than me,

and one of his favorite games was to collect

all the village children of my age,

we were about five at the time,

join us all up together, and then electrocute us.

And there was something perverse

about being a child that age that you go,

"Oh it hurts, it hurts."

And you keep going back for more.

So that was one bit of engineering,

and those were the days

when you had to service your own cars,

and I loved being dirty and mucky,

so I always used to help my father service his car,

and take off the cylinder heads, and things.

So I always had that sort of interest.
